Walked up Fifth; found my War generously displayed at Brentano’s (formerly Scribner’s) & B. Dalton, but nonexistent at Doubleday, where buyer didnt know it was back in stock. Taxi to 42nd St.; get Strauss CD at Record Hunter – Previn Heldenleben & 4 last songs. Lunch in Oak Room, clam chowder & white wine. After lunch, walked over to Library & went through the Dickens Exhibit; curator gave me a catalog-anthology. Back to hotel; bathed, washed hair & rested. By prearrangement, left hotel in cab & picked up Hugs at 7th Ave & Christopher St en route to La Chanterelle. Best meal Ive had in years: consommé w/ quenelles, breast of Muscovy duck, chocolate ice cream, coffee, Calvados, bottle of good bordeaux. Hugs had mousse, rack of lamb, “fruit soup” for dessert. Walked part way back to Hudson St. then caught cab; let him off at home, then came back to Algonquin. War news on TV. Asleep by 1. |
