MICHEL GRESSET Versailles. Exhausting three hours in Louvre, marble floors, many stairs, tremendous distances, all in the Denon section of 14 rooms; but at least I got to see Vermeer’s Lacemaker & The Astronomer, along with a great many other Dutch painters, which I missed on the earlier visit. Afterwards, had a pastry at Angelina’s & walked back across the Seine & down the R. Du Bac to the hotel. At 7 Hugs took me to the D’Orsay metro station & put me aboard the train to Versailles. Met there by Michel Gresset & his wife, who drove me to friend’s apartment for dinner; six of us, including Eudora Welty’s translator. Much talk of American literature in France; enjoyable evening all round. Driven back to metro by fellow guest after a splendid home cooked meal & superior wine. Didnt get back until 2.30 a.m. Hugs feared I was lost or mugged. |
