TranscriptWashington. Up often in night with urge to urinate; passed more blood. Hard asleep by 3, but woke at 6:30 with violent chills & fever – bed shook & teeth chattered so hard it woke Gwyn, who covered me with all available bedclothes & pillows. Sent out later for a thermometer; temperature 103° plus. Declined to see doctor but didn’t eat till afternoon; beef broth.
Felt better by sundown; went to National Endowment for Humanities dinner in main ballroom. Sat with Secretary Dick Cheney & his wife Lynne, who heads the Endowment. I introduced the Stonewall Jackson segment of the TV presentation, despite doubts that I was up to it because of my ailments. Felt better, though, & had no trouble. Back to room by 10.30. |
